Introduction to Thorncroft

My name is Claudia Pretorius and the owner of Thorncroft Pomeranians. We are situated in Gauteng, South Africa. My passion and love for the breed began when I was a little girl. My aunt had a Pomeranian and I just fell in love with this gorgeous breed then and there. So in 2011 I got my first three Pomeranians. Reading up on the breed and all the information on the colours and type and temperament, I decided I would love to get more involved in the breed. And so this exciting journey started and Thorncroft Pomeranians was born.

Our Philosophy

I strive to breed healthy beautiful Pomeranians, with their best interest at heart. And to honour those before me and their hard work, time, money and expertise, to do them justice and breed according to the FCI Pomeranian breed standard.

They created and devoted many many hours and years to develop this gorgeous breed we have the opportunity, to admire and spend our lives with today.

Breed Info Summary

Pomeranian Temperament

  • Poms are very intelligent little buisy bodies. That love to spend time with their owners. They are also real little entertainers. A real joy and they know exactly how to de-stress you with all their funny joyfull playing and cuddling. They are such happy dogs. They are easily trainable, and love to learn. They adapt well in new surroundings but care must be taken that they don't hurt themselves, because they are very inquisitive and can get themselves hurt in the process. I suggest playpins, when they are still young to keep them safe and chew toys to keep them busy.
  • Health
  • Poms bloodsugar levels can drop, so it is important to monitor this, and to keep their food available. More information on this topic will be provided by me.
  • They can suffer from patella problems, care is taken not to breed with dogs with this problem.
  • They can be born with open fontanelles, (this is when skeletal plates don't close [soft spot]).
  • The breed can also suffer from trachea problems. These dogs in general should not be bred.
  • Alopecia X (black skin desease), this is when the hair starts to fall out and there is no regrowth. Thyroid problems can also cause hairloss.

All measures are taken to not breed with dogs with these problems (hereditary defects), but remember it can pop up, even through selective breeding.

Another Reason Why Poms are much admired is:

Another fun fact about this breed is the variety of colours. They are truely a breed with a array of colours like a colour pallet.

Dental

There are very good quality dog toothpastes and teeth cleaning finger gloves or little brushes available from Veterinarians. The correct dog food does eliminate excess tar build-up, but their teeth still need to be cleaned. Like with all breeds to avoid tooth decay, which can lead to other health problems.

Eye Care

I use Pure Saline Water, and a cotton ball to clean around the eyes.

About Coat care

Regularly brush your Pom, to avoid matts and tangles. Especially behind the ears and under tummy, and behind elbows.I give them a brush everyday, this also helps the coat to shine and keeps the coat healthy. The hair around their foot pads should be kept short and neat aswell as their nails. It keeps them from slippi ng, keeps them cool, and prevents nailfractures. It is also very uncomfortable if their nails and feet are not kept neat. It puts extra strain on feet and toes and can get painful. The hair around the anus area should also be kept short, for hygienic reasons. When it comes to shampoos and conditioners. I ONLY use Spa Dog Shampoo and conditioner from Tropiclean, which can be ordered from www.amazon.com

Feeding Your Pomeranian

We feed our Poms Royal Canine X - Small Breed, it is fantastic for body, mind and coat. We recommend water despensers, it is just better in every way.
