Grooming A Pomeranian

It is of utmost importance to groom you Pomeranian the correct way.

This page is to explain how to bath and groom your Pomeranian.

Why regular grooming is essential and easy if you follow the steps:

It is important to comb your Pomeranian on a regular basis to avoid matts and tangles and to keep the coat healthy and shiny.

When you comb or brush your Pom, you also spread the natural oils and stimulate hair growth.

It is also has a calming effect on you and your Pom.

  • First step:

Before you give your Pom a bath, he MUST BE BRUSHED THOROUGHLY! If there are matts they must be removed. Gently lift the tangle with your finger, and cut it very carefully out. Be very careful not to cut to closely to the skin, that you do not cut the skin.

The hair must be brushed in sections, to make sure the strands are separated. I devide the coat into four sections.

Always comb from buttocks to head. Then from the ribs towards the spinal column. So from buttocks to neck, and then from left to right.

Gently spread the hair with your fingers, that you comb in lines spreading the hair as you progress. (Do not tug on the hair while combing).

This way of doing the sectional combing, you ensure that the hairs are separated and don't clump together.

I use a luke warm spray bottel to lightly (just a fine mist - not soaking wet!) moisten the hair.

The coat should never be brushed flat. (Not from head to tail).

  • Slicker Brush:

Uses short, dense, angled wire bristles for de-matting, de-shedding and removing undercoat.

  • Pin Brush - Ball Pin Brush:

Has longer, widely - spaced pins with rounded tips for gentle daily maintenance. - Smoothing and de-tangling longer coats. Making them a complementary tool for different grooming stages.

  • Slicker Brush - Best for:

Thick, dense double coats that mat easily.

- Purpose:

Removes mats, tangles and loose undercoat hair effectively.

- Effect:

Deeper, more intensive grooming.

  • Pin Brush:

Best for:

Daily brushes, especially the long guard hair.

- Purpose:

Gentle detangling, Smoothing, removing surface debris, and distributing natural oils.

So when to use which?

  • Use a Slicker Brush for the heavy - duty work of breaking up mats and removing heavy or loose undercoat.
  • Use a Pin Brush for daily brushing, Smoothing the topcoat, and finishing after using a Slicker Brush or rake.

Dogs benefit from both, because they serve different purposes, in a complete grooming routine.

Second Step:

After you thoroughly combed your Pomeranian all over; including sides, front legs + the feathering on front legs; the hind legs, the tummy and chest, and you removed any mats or tangles you can proceed to bathe your Pom.

  • Always check with your elbow to make sure the waters temperature is not too hot, remember their skin is sensitive.
  • Use cotton balls 2x - one for each ear. Gently place them whole (Do Not Tear the cotton balls smaller - otherwise they can be difficult to remove), one in each ear - reason being that the water does not go into the ear canal.
  • Wet your Pomeranian and lather the shampoo, spreading it evenly.
  • Gently wash your Pom - assure him/her while your bathing them. Kind words of reassurance goes a long way. It should be a relaxing -pampering occasion for both of you!
  • After washing, rinse thoroughly to remove all the shampoo.
  • Gently squeeze excess water from their coats, before you place the towel on them.
  • I wrap them like a tortilla in a bathtowel.
  • I gently clean around their eyes with a cotton ball which is lightly soaked in luke warm water. And dry with a face cloth (my dogs have their own toiletries 😉.
  • Remove the cotton balls from their ears and gently wipe the inside of the ears with luke warm wetted cotton balls - and dry with dry cotton balls. Very gently use earbuds to clean in all the nooks and crannies.
  • Gently towldry - Do not rub the hair excessively - just pat - dry.
  • Wrap them in a dry towel and gently remove one paw and cut the nails, then the other paw. Once you have cut one set of nails on the paw, cover it again in the towel and cut the next. This way you have control over your Pom and they cannot hurt themselves or pull away. They feel safe and secure this way.

Third Step:

  • Gently give a quick brush through with the Pin Brush before proceeding to the drying.
  • Set your hairdryer on low heat and distance the hairdryer 40 to 50cm away from your Pom. (Do not bring it closer - remember sensitivity to heat and the noise).
  • Reassure him or her while blowdrying and occasionally stop and comb sections of the hair to spread the hair to dry quicker and easier.
  • Before completely dry, wrap him in the towel again and clip the hair between the pawpads (when the hair is too wet, it sticks together so it's better when it's partly dry).
  • Blow-dry until there is no frizzyness to see in the coat anymore.
  • Make sure that your Pom is completely dry allover. Including under the chin, the chest, the armpits, the buttocks, behind the ears, and the head, ect. Otherwise if it's left damp they can get sick or a hotspot.

And Voilà your done! And your little Pom smells as fresh as a Daisy and looks gorgeous! Remember to complement them - THEY LOVE IT! AND YES THEY UNDERSTAND COMPLEMENTS VERY - VERY WELL!

New owners receive a complete booklet.
